Finding the right rug size for your living room

Choose the rug around your seating arrangement, not just the empty floor. A clear outline on the floor is often more useful than trying to judge size from a photograph.

Measure the seating area

Note the sofa width and the distance to any chairs. For a connected arrangement, aim to rest the front legs of the main seats on the rug where the room allows.

Mark the footprint

Use removable tape or sheets of paper to test the size. Check walking routes, door openings and the position of side tables before choosing.

Choose a layout that suits your room

A 160 × 230 cm rug can work with a compact seating group; a 120 × 170 cm rug can define a smaller area. The right fit depends on your furniture measurements, so treat these as starting points rather than fixed room-size rules.
